Fietsles is Dutch for biking lesson.
I teach adult immigrant women, most who have never biked before, how to bike and the rules of the road during a 10-session course sponsored by DeFietsmeesters. Classes of 10 to fifteen students (in yellow vests so we can find them quickly) spend their first few weeks learning to balance. Many also learn how to bike in long, flowing dresses. I love this work.
I painted a series of student groupings, some with other volunteer instructors. I made the paintings loose and unfocused to keep the student’s identity private — though it still feels like some of their strong personalities did peek through!
