About Cathy

I live in Utrecht, a city of 378,000 in the Netherlands.

I worked for decades as a city planner, community organizer, academic, and anthropologist — mainly in the American cities of Portland and Seattle. I’ve also been a portrait and landscape artist for most of my life and use art frequently in all of my work.

Living in the bicycle city of Utrecht is a pleasure. I volunteer to teach adult immigrant women how to bike with De Fietsmeesters, and I spend a few afternoons a week repairing children’s bikes for BikeFlip, a bike leasing service.

My greatest pleasure is watching people daily, on their bikes, living full, connected, joyful lives at every age, in comfortable public spaces designed for everyone to get around together by bike.

What I paint

For the past year I’ve been painting people on bikes, because I couldn't find much bike art with ordinary people here in the Netherlands. I see my paintings as little stories, slices of intensely personal life in public, in the world’s best bicycle city. I’ve written detailed descriptions for you to learn more about life and biking in the Netherlands when you click on the cards in my webshop.

I paint in watercolor, mostly on 21x30cm (8 ½ x 11") Arches watercolor paper.

I reprint my illustrations in color on medium weight (300 gsm/140lb) watercolor paper.

All my postcards are 10.5x15cm (4 x 6").
