Straat is the word for street. Damen means ladies. So this accidental pairing of the Damstraat sign and these two delightful young women is amusing to Dutch speakers. The women are clearly enjoying their conversation, facing each other.
I’ve seen many ways people share a single bike in the Netherlands. Most common is probably one person sitting on the back rack, usually holding onto the waist of the person pedaling the bike in front of them. People sit facing forward and back, straddling the bike or sitting side-saddle. Any style takes real skill and balance for both the person pedaling and the passenger. I can’t do any of it.
