Teeners

Teeners (or tieners) is Dutch for teenagers.

These young teens had pulled a little off the bike path near my place because they saw some friends. They were all doing the dance of asserting identity, dominance, and relationship. You see this dance all the time in other countries with groups of teens in cars.

Here in the Netherlands, this dance works even better from bikes — because bodies are more visible, carefully curated fashion is out front, and person-to-person touch is immediate. These teeners are figuring out who has the best threads, who can ride with more passengers, and where this group is headed.

Teens on bikes are a win for parents as well — kids become independent when they are quite young, they’re safer on a bike than driving a car, and bikes are a lot cheaper to buy than cars for teens.
