I saw this parent and child zipping around a corner close to my apartment. Maybe they were headed to a class, or a playdate, or the nearby ice cream shop. Most daily routine trips by bike are easier than getting places by car in Utrecht.
In the Netherlands, children often start their lives on a bike in the front box of a big bakfiets bike. They are ready to graduate to the front seat of a regular Dutch bike at around 9 months when their neck muscles are stronger. By age 3, most children are too big to sit in front of their parents, so they head behind on a padded back rack, sometimes with footrests and back support, like the bike footrests and back support in this painting that the little girl in the red jumpsuit is using to make her trip more comfortable.
